“Black Fungus Disease” and COVID

There is a huge uproar about the so-called “black fungus disease”. This is an infection in the nose and sinuses that can extend into the local structures like the eye and the brain. The scientific name of the infection is “Rhinocerebral Mucormycosis”. This condition is a known diagnosis – not a new thing that has come up with COVID. However, with the rise of COVID, the incidence of this condition is likely to rise as patients with COVID infection may have lowered immunity. It is more likely to be due to the indiscriminate use of steroids that reduces the resistance of our body to fungal infections. There is an official communication about this from the ENT surgeons society in Sri Lanka.
